About The Maumee Current
The Maumee Current is an independent news site covering the local government of Maumee, Ohio. We report on City Council, the city’s boards and commissions, the city budget, and the decisions that shape life in Maumee, along with Lucas County and State of Ohio decisions that affect the city. We are preparing to publish our first stories.
Our mission
Our mission is to make Maumee’s local government easier to follow, so residents have the information they need to take part in it.
What we cover
- Maumee City Council: meetings, votes, and ordinances
- City boards and commissions
- The city budget, taxes, and spending
- Development, zoning, and public projects
- Lucas County and state decisions that affect Maumee
We’ll publish news stories, meeting recaps, explainers, short videos, and a weekly roundup.
How we report
Most of our reporting starts with the public record: agendas, meeting packets, recordings, minutes, ordinances, and budget documents. We link to those records in our stories so readers can see the source for themselves. When we cover a meeting, we check what we report against the recording and the official minutes.
Our full policies are on our ethics and standards page.
News and opinion
Our news reporting is nonpartisan and does not take sides. Separately, we publish opinion pieces that argue for specific changes in city policy. Opinion is always labeled “Opinion,” carries the byline “The Maumee Current Opinion,” and is designed to look different from our news stories. Every story carries one label so you know what you’re reading: Reporting, Analysis, Meeting, or Opinion.
About our name
The Maumee River runs past the city, and a current is also what’s happening now. Our name is meant to carry both.
Our logo is a canal lock. In the 1840s, the Side Cut connected the Miami and Erie Canal to the Maumee River at Maumee through a series of limestone locks. Three of them are preserved today at Side Cut Metropark.
A lock lifts a boat from a lower water level to a higher one. We see our work the same way: taking what happens at City Hall and bringing it to the level of everyone who lives here.
